Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70362

This specimen was lot 70362 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1856-C CE. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-61. This nicely preserved and attractive example exhibits an even strike with lustrous surfaces. The fields offers a cartwheel effect that accentuates the devices and lovely patina. A handsome example of the type with a pleasing appearance." The Culiacan mint was opened in 1846 and struck all the silver and gold denominations. The early issues are scarce but become more common after 1855. The 1856 is scarce but not rare. Assayer CE is listed for 1846-70. The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.
