The first specimen was lot 6207 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $805. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Chihuahua. 8 Reales, 1856 (5/4)-RG. Exceptional grade for the very scarce date. Slightly weak strike. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED." The second specimen was lot 395 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £1,600 (about US$2,478 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "Republic, 8 reales, Chihuahua mint, 1856 RG, 5 of date over 4, (DP-Ca27), minor striking faults, about uncirculated, lightly toned." The third specimen was lot 51252 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[3] noted,

"MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1856-Ca RG (5/4). Chihuahua Mint. NGC MS-63+. The finest graded at NGC. A lustrous coin with prooflike fields in the protected areas, the result of extensive die polishing. Several die cracks along with a bold die clash on the eagle side. Our first offering of this date since November 2010 (Ponterio sale 155, lot 6207). All known examples have the 5/4 overdate, the result of an obverse hub recycled from the 1840's."

The Chihuahua mint struck eight reales 1831-95. Many of the early dates are rare but this one is still quite scarce. The SCWC lists no normal date but notes that the 1856/46 shown here is more available than the 1856/5.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW, the second specimen 27.05 g.

Catalog reference: KM 377.2, DP-Ca27.
