Mexico 1857-Ca JC 8 reales

Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72484

This specimen was lot 72484 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $240. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1857-Ca JC. Chihuahua Mint. Republic. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details Gold Shield. A fairly SCARCE date, this issue presents some typical striking weakness and light cleaning, but is now starting to re-tone quite nicely." The Chihuahua mint struck eight reales 1831-95. Many of the dates in the early fifties are rare but this one, tho not common, is obtainable. An overassayer, JC/RG, exists. This specimen was struck from heavily worn dies. Assayer JC operated until 1866.
