This specimen was lot 1358 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $299. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. ½ Escudo, 1857 Go PF. Guanajuato. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Well struck with attractive light yellow-gold surfaces. About Uncirculated." The Guanajuato mint struck half escudos 1845 and 1849-63 and is considered a common mint.
