Mexico 1857-Mo GF 1/2 escudo
The first specimen is a half escudo of the Mexico City mint, which struck this denomination 1825-69. Long[2] notes this date as "scarce but not rare." The second specimen was lot 1366 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $218.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. ½ Escudo, 1857 Mo GF. Mexico City. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A very nice example of this scarce issue, the strike is sharp but not quite full at the very centers, and the surfaces pleasing. Choice About Uncirculated."
