Mexico 1855-C CE 8 reales

Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70361

The first specimen was lot 70361 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1855-C CE. Culiacan Mint. NGC UNC Details—Reverse Scratched. This nicely preserved and attractive example exhibits a strong strike with lustrous surfaces. Though the centers are a touch weak as is typical for this date. Close inspection reveals a small area of thin scratches on the reverse above the left wing and right wing, somewhat subdued. Despite its shortcomings a handsome example of sneaky date." The Culiacan mint was opened in 1846 and struck all the silver and gold denominations. The early issues are scarce but become more common after 1855. The 1855 is fairly common. Assayer CE is listed for 1846-70. The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.
