Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72423

This specimen was lot 72423 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $2,684. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1855-Pi MC. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC MS-66. Finest and only Mint State of just two graded by NGC. A beautiful well struck example with light toning. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The San Luis Potosi mint struck one reales 1831 and 1837-62 and quite a few dates are rare. Assayer MC (Mariano Catano) served 1849-59. The catalog notes an 1855/4 overdate and awards it a slight premium. Unlike the half reales, which appear occasionally in gem condition, this denomination nearly always comes heavily circulated.
