This specimen was lot 1256 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted,

"MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1855 Go PF. Guanajuato. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Slightly reflective fields, with attractive surfaces that show a dusting of coppery gold toning. There is a trace of an underdigit in the second 5, possibly part of the 4 known on a good many of this issue. A well made, sharp coin. About Uncirculated."

The Guanajuato mint struck eight escudos 1825-70 and is one of the abundant mints for that denomination; most dates are common.
