Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72169

This specimen was lot 72169 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $4,636. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1862-Ho FM. Hermosillo Mint. NGC AU-50. Extremely rare date. Finest of just two examples graded by NGC. One of only two 1/2 Reales from this scarce mint. Almost certainly the finest known for this date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. According to the SCWC, Hermosillo only struck half reales 1839, 1862 and 1867. Assayer FM (Florencio Monteverde) is recorded for 1871-76 but is also known on eight reales of 1861-65. All of the Hermosillo minors (half, one, two and four reales) are scarce to very rare. Many, tho not this one, feature the Sonoran eagle used only at Hermosillo and Culiacan.
