Stack's Bowers ANA sale, lot 41323
SB824-41323r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41323 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Sinaloa. 1/4 Real, 1862. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-61 Brown. An impressive Mint State survivor from this issuance. Undoubtedly RARE in this grade, the present example stands as the only one certified by NGC. A bold strike gives the coin exceptional clarity and definition throughout, alongside ample luster in the fields. Toned to a handsome brown coloration with splashes of reddish brilliance adding to its charm. From the EMO Collection." This specimen is one of a series of copper quarter reals issued 1847-66 by the "free and sovereign" state of Sinaloa. It is a common date but, like most Mexican state issues, not often found in the quality shown. The Mexican constitution reserved the right to coin gold and silver to the federal government but granted the right to mint copper to the states, which right they used and abused. For some states, this was a major source of revenue as the metal content was much less than the face value. For others, it was an opportunity to thumb their noses at the central government by proclaiming their "free and sovereign" status.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: EMO-3147.1 (Plate coin); KM-363.
