Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 53157
SB124-53157 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 53157 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Escudos, 1862-Go YE. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-62. A VERY RARE and desirable date, this enthralling example radiates with exceptional brilliance and a slightly weak but nevertheless impressive strike. Meanwhile, it should come as absolutely no surprise that this specimen represents the finest (by far) of just three seen for the date and mint in the NGC census. From the Collection of Jacques Benuzillo (1899-1964)." The four escudos is the scarcest of the gold denominations of the republic. The Guanajuato mint was the most prolific producer but even many of its issues are rare. The SCWC lists this as a common date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-83; KM-381.4.
