Mexico 1862-Zs VL 4 escudos
The specimen shown was struck in Zacatecas, which struck four escudos 1860 and 1862 only. The first specimen was lot 3341 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $18,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "1862 VL 4 escudos. Zacatecas mint. MS-64 (NGC). Types as above. Bright yellow gold with soft orange toning accents. Highly lustrous with considerable reflectivity in the fields. Minor planchet imperfections are noted near the date, die finishing lines visible on both sides. Sharply struck. A superb example of the type, far nicer than typically seen. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
The second specimen was lot 1308 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $4,025. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 4 Escudos, 1862 Zs VL. Zacatecas. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. An ex jewelry coin of this rare date, with traces of a mount removed near date and moderate hairlines. Scarce and seldom offered. Extremely Fine."
