Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72060

This specimen was lot 72060 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,464. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/4 Real, 1862/57-SLPi. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC AU-58. Very rare date. Last year of mint for this denomination. Second finest of only two graded by NGC. So rare that it was unknown to Buttrey and Hubbard in their first edition. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." The San Luis Potosi mint struck these tiny coins 1842-47, 1851, 1854-57 and 1862. No regular date is listed in the SCWC for the year. This date is not noted therein as rare but the majority of the quarter reales were struck in the first few years. The conversion to decimal coinage in the 1860's terminated the denomination.
