The first specimen was lot 8734 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $345. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. 8 Reales, 1863-OAE. DP plate coin. Traces of adjustment marks. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The second specimen was lot 20567 in Ponterio sale 163 (Baltimore, November 2011), where it sold for $805. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. 8 Reales, 1863-OAE. NGC MS-64." The third specimen was lot 98189 in Heritage Monthly Auction 61167 (Dallas, August 2020), where it sold for $408. The catalog description noted, "Mexico, Republic 8 Reales 1863 O-AE AU58 NGC, Oaxaca mint. Variety with 'plain top 3' in the date. Lightly toned and well preserved with scant wear on the raised devices and partially lustrous surfaces devoid of major handling evidence. Quite scarce in this charming quality. Ex. FoxLair Collection." The fourth specimen was lot 36455 in Heritage sale 3100 (Hong Kong, July 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description noted, "Mexico Republic 8 Reales 1863 O-AE MS62 NGC, Oaxaca mint. Showing a lovely patina to the sharp and lustrous surfaces." The fifth specimen was lot 70747 in from the Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[3] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1863-O AE. Oaxaca Mint. NGC MS-61. Graced with light tone, this Mint State survivor exhibits some central softness, however the textured luster in the fields remains unbroken. While this issue is considered amongst the most available of the Oaxacan dates of the 1860s, in certified Mint State, it remain[s] a real challenge to find." The sixth specimen was lot 70748 in from the Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[3] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1863-O AE. Oaxaca Mint. PCGS Genuine--Spot Removed, Unc Details. Originally well struck, this example from the always popular Oaxaca Mint presents with some nice gray patina."

The year 1863 presents many varieties from the Oaxaca mint. Dunigan and Parker[2] list "O 1863 FR" (Oa09), "'a' within 'O' 1863 AE" (Oa10), "'a' over 'O' 1863 AE" (Oa11) and "O 1863 AE" (Oa12, shown here). The authors theorize that two mints were operating in the same town simultaneously, accounting for the variations in mintmark and die styles. The Oaxaca mint (or mints) operated 1858-93. Assayer AE, recorded intermittently between 1858 and 1890, was Agustin Edner. In the 1860's, the mint was leased to the state of Oaxaca.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
