Ponterio sale 155, lot 6309

This specimen was lot 6309 in Ponterio sale 155 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $248. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Guadalajara. 8 Reales, 1863-JG. weak strike as usual. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED." The Guadalajara mint issued this type 1825-95. Assayer JG is listed for 1836-63 along with 1863/52, 1863/59, 1863/2, 1863/4 overdates but assayer FV remains rare. Most dates after 1875 from this mint are readily available.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce (assayer FV is rare).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
