Stack's Bowers February 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74672

The first specimen was lot 25325 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $632.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1863Mo-TH, MS64 NGC, sharply struck details with full mint luster." The second specimen was lot 74672 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mint Error -- Double Struck Off Center -- 8 Reales, 1863-Mo TH. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU-55. The second strike is 60% off center and only clear on the cap and rays side, where it left a clear date on the original strike. On the eagle side, the area of the second strike appears only as distorted, indicating that no eagle-side die was in place at the time. The coin is boldly detailed, toned a dark gray, and free of marks, resulting in a spectacular and interesting error that will undoubtedly bring attention from many prospective bidders." Most Mexico City mint issues are common and this one is no exception. It does not normally bring the price shown above. Assayer CH is also recorded for the date.
