Heritage sale 3067, lot 31993

This specimen was lot 31993 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Mexico: Republic gold 8 Escudos 1863 C-CE AU58 PCGS, Culiacan mint. An unusually high-grade example of the type--a fact clearly noted by PCGS, who has certified it as the finest example in their census--this ever-popular republican issue presents bright and reflective fields with just the slightest reddish tinge to the legends. An intriguing array of die polish lines are noted over both sides, though their arrangement seems somewhat irregular, adding further interest to this offering. Slight weakness to the legends is observed, but center detailing remains very strong throughout." The Culiacan mint struck eight escudos 1846-70 and most dates are reasonably available.
