Mexico 1866-C CE 8 escudos
The Culiacan mint struck eight escudos 1846-70 and most dates are reasonably available but are seldom seen in this quality. This specimen was lot 31239 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Gold 8 Escudos 1866 C-CE MS61 NGC, Culiacan mint. Lustrous Mint State with some wispy handling marks accounting for the designation, with the overall planchet porosity and crudeness probably also contributing. The latter are nevertheless characteristic of the issue (Long: 'several descriptions mention rough or granular planchets') and should not be distracting. The 1866/5 variety, identified by the large die breaks to the left of the book on the obverse."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
