Mexico H3049-31206r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31206 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $2,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maximilian 5 Centavos 1866-G MS64 NGC, Guanajuato mint. The rare and final date from this three-year series, delivering outstanding visual allure in the form of teal and russet color that resides within the protected recesses. A deeply impressed obverse strike immediately catches the eye, and both sides present evidence of being struck with clashed dies. A superb near-Gem, absolutely choice in hand, and presently the singular highest-certified example of the type." Altho this type was demonetized as soon as the Juaristas recaptured Mexico City, it is normally found quite worn, suggesting that it circulated for many years anyway.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, .039 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 385.
