Mexico 1866-Go peso

This specimen was lot 1473 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Maximiliano I, 1864-1867. Peso, 1866 Go. Guanajuato. Meticulously detailed bearded head of the Emperor r., MAXIMILIANO EMPERADOR. Rv. Habsburg griffins support oval crowned Mexican Arms. Sole date of this remote Branch Mint, a coin of legendary rarity, especially in the highly elusive higher grades of preservation. This coin's strike is needle sharp, exemplified by the minute but crystal-clear engravers' names below the truncation, NAVALON/OCAMPO, SPIRITU. This splendid coin will rank high on any listing of finest known examples. MS-62 (NGC). NGC Census: 1; none finer. Ex Millennia Collection, Goldberg, May 2008, Lot 1130." The Mexico City mint produced this peso in 1866-67 and its issue is common; the Potosi mint issue is scarce and this Guanajuato issue is rare, especially in nice condition.
