This specimen was lot 133 in Ponterio sale 158 (New York, January 2011), where it sold for $14,950. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1866-CA-FP. EXTREMELY RARE Maximilian Era 8 Escudos. EXTREMELY RARE date. Nice strike, attractive. EXTREMELY FINE." The specimen shown is one of a series struck 1841-71 at the Chihuahua mint. That mint struck mostly eight reales and eight escudos. The other denominations struck, the silver 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 2 reales, are rare.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.875 fine gold, .76 troy oz AGW.
