The first specimen is from a series struck 1864-66 for the Maximilian regime. This specimen was lot 6472 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $189.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Maximilian. 5 Centavos, 1864-G. Very scarce in high grade. Sharply struck, cleaned. EXTREMELY FINE." Altho this type was demonetized as soon as the Juaristas recaptured Mexico City, its extensive wear suggests that it circulated for many years anyway. The second specimen was lot 45402 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1864-G. Guanajuato Mint. Maximilian. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. An attractive example of this hugely popular and interesting coinage, with bold strike and deep, rich toning that shows hints of cobalt and plum."

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, .039 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 90,000.

Catalog reference: KM 385.
