This specimen was lot 31047 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $3,240. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico: Republic gold 8 Escudos 1864 Zs-Mo AU55 NGC, Zacatecas mint, The first of a small handful of extremely rare dates for this mint-type, and one which Long recorded just 9 auction occurrences of (including the Gerber and Norweb pieces), to which we can add a single result--the remarkable MS62 Eliasberg example. Standing as the first such representative that we have had the opportunity to handle, according to our research the current offering will also mark the 1864 Zs-Mo 8 Escudos' first auction appearance in over 16 years. Admitting light circulation throughout, perhaps the most singular feature of the selection is the exquisite sharpness witnessed to the legends, the surrounding peripheries functioning as wells of still-watery luster that effortlessly guides the eye around the planchet. A small toning spot is noted at the base of the arm, though a pull-away effect at the Qs clearly points to this being an old feature of the coin's storage. Sure to fill a hole in even the most advanced collections. From the WTR Collection." The Zacatecas mint struck eight escudos 1858-71. Assayer MO (1855-60, 1863-65) is listed as slightly more common than assayer VL (1860-66).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold.
