This eight reales is one of a series struck 1825-97 at the Zacatecas mint. This date is common. Assayer VL is recorded for 1859-64; assayer MO is also recorded for 1855-60 and 1863-65. This specimen was lot 6466 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $299. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. 8 Reales, 1864/3-VL. VERY SCARCE overdate (missing from the J.B. Parker Collection). ALMOST UNCIRCULATED."
