Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73316
SB224-73316r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73316 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1864-Pi RO. San Luis Potosi Mint. PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, EF Details. An EXTREMELY RARE date for San Luis Potosi, struck just before three-year interruption for this issue caused by the creation of the Second Mexican Empire. Most examples of this date appear to have circulated in East Asia, and the present coin is no exception; a handful of chopmarks populate the obverse with two more seen on the reverse. Nonetheless, the coin retains full legibility including the all-important date, mintmark, and assayer. Brilliant and rather argent aside from spots of darker tone, this exciting piece will undoubtedly fill a longstanding gap in a lucky collector's holdings." The San Luis Potosi mint was one of three to strike pesos with Maximilian's portrait but in 1864, it struck republican four reales and eight reales. Assayer RO is listed for 1860-64.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.12; DP-Pi52.
