from Stack's Bowers November 2015 sale, lot 39451
Mexico SB1115-39451r.jpg

This specimen was lot 39451 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Empire of Maximilian. 5 Centavos, 1864-P. NGC AU-50. RARE. Only one example certified finer (AU-58) at NGC and PCGS. A very seldom offered date and mint mark combination. Bountiful amounts of remaining detail for the assigned grade. An always in demand coin from this short-lived series. Nicely toned and quite attractive." Altho this type was demonetized as soon as the Juaristas recaptured Mexico City, it is normally found quite worn, suggesting that it circulated for many years anyway. This is the most expensive Maximilianista issue after the 1866 twenty pesos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, .039 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-385.2.
