Mexico 1868-Zs YH 8 reales

Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73293

This specimen was lot 73293 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $408. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1868-Zs YH. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS AU-58. On the cusp of Mint State, with only the barest hint of wear atop the high points and strong luster through the fields." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. Production in 1868 was shared between assayer JS (1867-68) and YH (1868-74). No varieties are reported in the SCWC.
