Mexico 1868-Ca JG 8 reales
This specimen was lot 70334 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1868-Ca JG. Chihuahua Mint. NGC AU Details—Reverse Cleaned. Variety with coin axis. This decently preserved and attractive example exhibits a strong strike with relatively smooth surfaces and lovely rich cabinet patina complemented by hints of iridescence. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning on the reverse, now subdued and pleasing. Despite its shortcomings, a wholesome example of this RARE date issue." The Chihuahua mint began casting eight reales in 1810 in the opening part of the War of Independence. Machinery was obtained and portrait eight reales were produced 1814-22. The first cap and ray eight reales was issued in 1831. The early issues are rare but become more common after 1842. The 1868 is rather scarce. Assayer JG is listed for 1866-68. Most Chihuahua minors prior to the 1870's are scarce to rare. The mint was closed in 1895 along with Alamos, Durango, Guadalajara and Hermosillo. Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi were closed in 1893.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
