Natl Cong c1812 2 reales rev Ponterio 169-11151.jpg

This specimen was lot 11151 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $4,112. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence Supreme National Congress. 2 Reales, (1812). Struck in silver. With Chilpancingo type A countermark, hand holding bow and arrow between quiver with arrows, sword and bow. VERY RARE. Typical crude manufacture. VERY FINE." The SCWC shows this type without the countermark (KM 205) and shows this countermark applied to other coins (KM 257) but not this combination. It is likely as rare as the auction listing claims.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 6.77 grams, cast silver.

Catalog reference: KM-205 (for type), KM-257 (for countermark).
