Aureo sale 238, lot 378

This specimen was lot 378 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 140 euro (about US$222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1812. México. JJ. 8 reales. Parte de brillo original. Escasa. MBC/MBC+. (eight reales of 1812, Mexico City mint. Lustrous, scarce, choice very fine.)"

The year 1812 saw assayers HJ (1809-14) and JJ (1812-21). Assayer JJ is common while HJ is scarce. Later years are slightly scarcer as the spread of the war of independence curtailed the flow of bullion to the mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15871, Cal. 549, KM 111.
