This specimen is one of a type struck 1810-13 in Chihuahua. During the War of Independence, the royalists opened branch mints and struck dollars at Chihuahua, Zacatecas (KM 111.5), Guadalajara (KM 111.3), Guanajuato (KM 111.4) and Durango (KM 111.2). Some of the branch mint issues vary considerably from the appearance of the Mexico City issues, others are quite faithful. No dies were available at Chihuahua, so castings were issued with counterstamps to mark them official. Die struck dollars are known from Chihuahua for 1815-22 but are quite a bit scarcer than the cast type shown here. The Chihuahua mint remained open after independence and struck coins until 1895.

Recorded mintage: unknown (probably in the millions).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15860, KM 123.
