This specimen is one of a type struck 1811-21 in Mexico City. The date is common, though several varieties are known: 1814/3 HJ, 1814/3 JJ/HJ, 1814/3 JJ, 1814 HJ. Assayer HJ is very rare. Similar coins using this bust were struck in Peru, Guatemala, Chile and Bolivia. During the War of Independence, the royalists opened branch mints and struck this type at Chihuahua (111.1), Zacatecas (KM 111.5), Guadalajara (KM 111.3), Guanajuato (KM 111.4) and Durango (KM 111.2).
