This specimen is one of a type struck 1811-21 in Mexico City. The date is common, though several varieties are known: 1814/3 HJ, 1814/3 JJ/HJ, 1814/3 JJ, 1814 HJ. Assayer HJ is very rare. Similar coins using this bust were struck in Peru, Guatemala, Chile and Bolivia. During the War of Independence, the royalists opened branch mints and struck this type at Chihuahua (111.1), Zacatecas (KM 111.5), Guadalajara (KM 111.3), Guanajuato (KM 111.4) and Durango (KM 111.2). Some of the branch mint issues vary considerably from the appearance of the Mexico City issues, others are quite faithful.
