This specimen was lot 43476 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Real, 1814-MR. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS GOOD-06 Gold Shield. Very scarce type. Worn, but undamaged." The Guadalajara mint was opened in 1812 and was one of the most active during the War of Independence, producing half, one, two, four and eight reales in silver and four and eight escudos in gold. The one real shown here, struck 1813-15, is very scarce. The mint was retained by the republicans after independence and operated until 1895.
