This specimen was lot 11108 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $529. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence Durango. 8 Reales, 1814-MZ. Very attractive. Minor graffiti on reverse. Of typical crude manufacture. Very weak strike. Toned. GOOD." The Durango mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22; only the later dates (1819-22) are reasonably common. Many are very crude.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
