The first specimen was lot 3233 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $517.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1814 JJ 1/2 escudo. Mexico City mint. MS-61 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous gold. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type, struck 1814-20, is the only half escudo struck in Mexico in colonial times. The 1814 is by far the most frequently encountered date.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .048 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 1.68 grams, 14.60 mm diameter.
