Aureo sale 238, lot 379

This specimen was lot 379 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 160 euro (about US$254 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1813. México. HJ. 8 reales. Plata ligeramente agria. Golpecito. Muy escasa. (MBC+). (eight reales of 1813, Mexico City mint. Slightly rough planchet, rim bump, scarce, choice very fine.)"

The year 1813 saw assayers HJ (1809-14) and JJ (1812-21). Assayer JJ is common while HJ is scarce. Later years are slightly scarcer as the spread of the war of independence curtailed the flow of bullion to the mint.
