Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72061
SB223-72061r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72061 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. War of Independence. 2 Reales, 1813-Z FP. Zacatecas Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-30. While displaying significant weakness of strike due to the typical crude manufacture of this issue, the present example retains plenty of eye appeal. The legends are fully legible and the deeply toned surfaces lack any unsightly cleaning or damage. A great example of this SCARCE Royalist type. Privately purchased from Ben Bell (Civitas Galleries), 03/2010." The Zacatecas mint was opened in 1810 to serve local miners as the anarchy of the War of Independence made it dangerous to ship ore to Mexico City. Two reales with a local design were issued 1810-12, this type with an imaginary bust 1813-18 and a draped bust design 1818-22. The mint remained open after independence and operated until 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver.
