This specimen was lot 72066 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Insurgent Coinage. Supreme National Congress of America. 1/2 Real, 1813. Tlalpujahua. PCGS EF-40. A wonderfully original example with plenty of well-preserved detail. Some central weakness is noted, as is common for this issue. The surfaces are toned to a pleasing pewter gray with darker hues in the protected areas around the legend. Ex: Paul Brombal (04/2009)." The Supreme National Congress was the formal name of Morelos' Congress of Chilpancingo, which declared independence from Spain in 1813. This rare type of 1811-14 is known in copper (KM 209) and silver (KM 210).
