Mexico 1813 4 reales KM-214
This specimen was lot 39397 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. National Congress. 4 Reales, 1813. NGC FINE-15. VERY RARE. Struck-silver insurgent issue. A nearly impossible coin to find. A coin that must have circulated long past the independence, but which retains all of the identifying characteristics of the type. Cataloged in Grove for $2,500 in FINE clear back in 1981, the current Krause SCWC lists the coin at $2,700 in FINE though we could not find any recent auction transaction records to indicate current valuation. Given the rarity of the piece, the catalog values are, frankly, irrelevant. If you are missing the type as many collectors are, now is the time to add an example as it may be a considerable period before another one becomes available." The SCWC lists this as minted in Mexico City, which seems improbable as the insurgents never captured the capital until the final royalist surrender in 1821.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: .903 silver.
Catalog reference: KM-214; Grove-2205.
