Aureo sale 238, lot 42

This specimen was lot 42 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 150 euro (about US$238 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1813. Chihuahua. RP. 8 reales. Busto imaginario. Fundida. Rara. (MBC-). (cast eight reales of 1813, Chihuahua mint, imaginary bust. Rare, about very fine.)"

This type was issued 1810-13 from the temporary mint of Chihuahua, Mexico. Lacking striking machinery until 1814, the pesos were cast using Mexico City eight reales as patterns. The "Mo" was changed to "Ca" and two countermarks were added to verify their authenticity.
