from Stack's Bowers 2016 ANA sale, lot 21164
Mexico SB816-21164r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21164 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Chihuahua. 8 Reales, 1815-RP. FINE. VERY RARE, fewer than 10 known of the date. Struck over an earlier cast issue. Clear legends including the date, and with even wear that has left nearly all of the design intact. Both undertype and overtype portrait are clearly visible, with the nose in particular offset almost as if it were a conjoined bust. The reverse exhibits the same traits, with clear evidence of both the over and under types present. A VERY RARE and desirable piece that is fully original and sure to see spirited bidding." The Chihuahua mint was opened in 1810 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It made cast eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII until it received minting machinery in 1814. This type was issued 1815-22 but none are common. Both specimens appear to be struck over earlier cast eight reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.
