Mexico (1815-21) real KM-277
The first specimen was lot 43514 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Guerrero. Real, ND. PCGS POOR-01 Gold Shield. Eagle countermark on a Spanish colonial 1 Real, attributed by the SCWC to Vicente Guerrero. Host coin worn slick." The second specimen was lot 70251 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[2] noted,
"MEXICO. Guerrero. War of Independence. Real, ND (1816-21). PCGS Genuine--Holed, Poor/Fair Details; Countermark: Fine Details. Oval Mexican eagle countermark on a Mexico City 1766-Mo M Real of Charles III (KM-77). Holed, graffitied, and well-worn, this pillar-type host has been through a lot but now serves as an excellent canvas for a bold War of Independence counterstamp. Moderately toned throughout and quite eye-catching, this piece will please specialists in the series.
According to the Standard Catalog as well as other major references on this subject, these particular countermarks are thought to have been issued by General Vicente Guerrero, leader of the insurgents of the south, 1816-1821. However, due to the lack of contemporary documentation this is speculative."
General Guerrero's countermark also appears on half, two and eight reales. Wikipedia notes,
"Vicente Ramón Guerrero (Spanish: [biˈsente raˈmoŋ ɡeˈreɾo]; baptized August 10, 1782 – February 14, 1831) was a Mexican soldier and statesman who became the nation's second president. He was one of the leading generals who fought against Spain during the Mexican War of Independence. He is the first and so far only Mexican President of African descent and the first black president in North America. During his presidency, he abolished slavery in Mexico. Guerrero was deposed in a rebellion by his Vice-President Anastasio Bustamante."
