from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 1613

This specimen was lot 1613 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $211.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Guadalajara, Mexico, 4 reales, Ferdinand VII, 1815MR. Lustrous, non-toned AXF with minor marks per the grade, slightly weak bust and crude rims as usual, key date for type." This specimen displays the standard bust of Ferdinand VII used in Mexico on the four reales 1816-21, but this is a Guadalajara issue, known from 1814-15. The four reales is the scarcest of the silver denominations and the "standard bust" of Ferdinand VII is a scarce type for the denomination, even in low grade. The Guadalajara issue, tho not common, appears quite a bit more often than the Mexico City issue. The bust was likely copied from the eight reales, as the Mexico City mint issued no standard bust four reales until 1816.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver, .390 troy oz AGW, this specimen 13.61 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15708, CT-719; KM-102.2.
