Mexico 1815-Ga MR 8 reales
The first specimen was lot 62 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 350 euro (about US$555 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1815. Guadalajara. RM. 8 reales. Atractiva. Rara y más así. EBC-. (eight reales of 1815, Guadalajara mint, attractive, rare thus, about extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 24713 in Heritage sale 3016 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[2] noted, "Ferdinand VII 8 Reales 1815Ga-MR, MS63 NGC, very scarce date, incredibly sharp details for this War of Independence issue. The surfaces are lightly toned and display abundant mint luster. A choice coin and among the nicest we have seen for this crudely struck series." The Guadalajara mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22; this date is rare. Many are very crude.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
