Aureo sale 238, lot 63

This specimen was lot 63 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 420 euro (about US$666 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1818. Guadalajara. FS. 8 reales. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Rara así. EBC. (eight reales of 1818, Guadalajara mint. Handsome, lustrous, rare thus, extremely fine.)"

The Guadalajara mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22; this date is common but seldom seen in this condition. Many are very crude.
