This specimen was lot 72147 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1818-Zs AG. Zacatecas Mint. Ferdi[n]and VII. PCGS VF-30 Gold Shield. A wholesome coin with sharp design details, struck slightly off center and toned a medium to dark gray." Shown is an 1818Z half real, one of a type struck 1813-19. The "imaginary bust" shown of Ferdinand VII, or rather a local imitation of it, was used at the Zacatecas mint while it was in the hands of the Mexican royalists. After the surrender of the royalists in 1821, the mint was operated by the republic until 1905.
