Aureo sale 238, lot 389

This specimen was lot 389 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 190 euro (about US$301 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1818. México. JJ. 8 reales. Parte de brillo original. Pátina. Escasa y más así. EBC+/EBC. (Eight reales of 1818, Mexico City mint. Partial luster, toned, scarce thus, extremely fine.)"

The Mexico City mint continued to operate throughout the war of independence and did not fall into the hands of the rebels until the royalists' final surrender in 1821.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
