This specimen was lot 1536 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $529. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence Durango. 8 Reales, 1818-CG/RM. Crude uneven strike around edges, nice detail in the hair and wreath. Some luster still remaining. EXTREMELY FINE." The Durango mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22; this date is not rare but seldom seen in this condition. Many are very crude. A substantial premium is awarded to this overassayer.
