Mexico 1817-D MZ 8 reales
This specimen was lot 4092 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $193.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1817-DMZ. Durango Mint. NGC EF Details--Repaired. Some light surface smoothing. Well struck for type. Struck on a well rounded planchet allowing for full legends and well rendered portrait. Lightly toned." The Durango mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22; only the later dates (1819-22) are reasonably common. Many are very crude. Similar coins using this bust were struck in Peru, Guatemala, Chile and Bolivia. During the War of Independence, the royalists opened branch mints and struck this type at Chihuahua (KM 111.1), Zacatecas (KM 111.5), Guadalajara (KM 111.3), Guanajuato (KM 111.4) and Durango (KM 111.2). Some of the branch mint issues vary considerably from the appearance of the Mexico City issues, others are quite faithful.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver.
