This specimen was lot 913 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $1,782.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mexico City. 8 Escudos, 1817-MoJJ. Lustrous. EXTREMELY FINE-ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." This type was struck in Mexico City 1814-21 in the last years of colonial rule. It is considerably scarcer than the preceding imaginary bust type issued 1808-12.
